Our Farm
KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY
Farrs Farm has been in the May family for three generations. A 15th century Devon farmhouse in the middle of the Taw Valley, surrounded by fields, woodland and riverbanks. Our south-facing pastures capture the summer sun, which helps produce mineral-rich grass which gives healthy, natural nutrition for our livestock.
We farm in tune and with respect to our surroundings. Our traditional approach in caring for hedgerows and woodland areas enables the farm to support a diverse range of insects and wildlife. Native wild animals from otters, deer and bats to kingfishers, hares and dormice can be spotted in and around the farm. We respect the landscape, employing farming methods which aid in sustaining and supporting the stunning biodiversity which calls our farm home. Over the years we’ve unearthed many curiosities in the house, fields and surrounding woodland. From ancient farm machinery hidden from the world by overgrown bracken, items buried in walls, even a wooden plough was discovered tucked away in part of the old thatched roof.
With the rhythm of nature
A seat at our table
As a family we have open arms to people and animals alike. The farmhouse kitchen has played host to lambs, chickens, ducks, bats and even a hedgehog. Regular visitors to the farm have become accustomed to accepting whatever they may find wandering around the kitchen. This is how we like to look after our animals; we give them the care and attention they need, taking extra time to nurse sick animals back to health when needed. We work closely with our vet and attend regular meetings to keep up with new practices and methods to maintain a pro-active approach to our animal’s health and well-being.
